This platform combines a Raspberry Pi-based interface with a poLight® MLens® tunable lens, enabling dynamic focus control without mechanical movement. Real-time adjustment allows users to explore focus performance across varying distances and conditions, while the plug-and-play design simplifies setup and accelerates testing.
The compact form factor and standard interfaces make it easy to integrate into existing development environments, whether for standalone evaluation or as part of a larger vision system.
MLens® Product Features
MLens® portfolio of devices are objective lenses with tunable focus in a standard M12/S-mount form factor, manufactured in partnership with Sunex, a leading optics manufacturer known for high-quality performance in demanding applications. Each lens contains a custom designed precision rigid lens system combined with the ultrafast, ultralow power consuming TLens® tunable lens. TLens® is widely used in industrial, consumer and XR products where typically poLight® works with OEMs to design full custom optics incorporating the TLens® element. The MLens® family of “off the shelf” products, allows industrial, machine vision, and board camera customers to access the same performance benefits provided by TLens®, without having to design a full custom lens.
Each MLens® product is designed to fit into standard M12x0.5mm (S-Mount) threaded lens holders widely used in board camera applications. The portfolio shares common mechanical and electrical interfaces allowing end users and installers to select or change lenses easily. MLens® products are fully integrated electro optical systems. In addition to the lens elements, each MLens® contains poLight’s proprietary PD50LE TLens® driver and control IC, as well as a temperature sensor that can be accessed by the host system over the same i2c interface that controls the lens focus. The temperature sensor and EEPROM are not required for MLens® operation but are provided for convenience of system integration potential further use.
Development and Integration
This EVK provides a practical foundation for imaging system development beyond lens evaluation. It allows for quick setup, real-time testing, and evaluation of imaging performance across varying lighting conditions and focus distances.
Developers can use the platform to prototype embedded vision systems, validate performance in real-world scenarios, and integrate into existing AI or computer vision workflows with minimal overhead.
Developed by Image Quality Labs, the platform reflects experience in embedded camera design, camera driver development, ISP tuning, and image quality evaluation. It can also serve as a starting point for further system optimization or transition to custom camera solutions, with support available for integration, tuning, and performance validation as needed.
